Full Spectrum (FS) addresses the philosophical, strategic, functional, and technical aspects of advancing railroad operations. It focuses on utilizing a technologist strategy to advance rail operations and maximize efficiency, often breaking with industry norms and providing innovative insight into railroad operations and technologies.

Full Spectrum has been lauded by senior industry officials as THE periodical for rail innovation.

Full Spectrum, contains ideas, that in my opinion, show the industry the path to much more efficient and profitable operations. If you cannot get sparks for ideas to improve railroading while reading Full Spectrum, there may not be much that will inspire you to new ideas. Railroads need original thinkers, and Ron is definitely one of the best.Senior Industry Economist,

FS50 - The Technologist
Managing a railroad’s massive set of mobile resources in a wired world doesn’t make sense anymore. While that was the only choice until a decade ago, the ubiquitous deployment of both private and commercial wireless data services affords each railroad the opportunity to substantially advance its operating practices now ... and to do so independent of the pursuit of PTC. However, there is one primary reason why such a transition is not underway. Neither the railroads nor the suppliers have incorporated the necessary skill set in their management ranks to deliver Strategic Railroading, to deliver an operations strategy in sync with a technology strategy. The technicians know their technologies, the business analysts know their finances, and operations know their processes. But, no one is looking to bring these disciplines together in a holistic fashion that increases efficiencies not only within individual departments, but across the railroads ... and across the industry. Railroads and suppliers alike need Technologists.

FS51 - A Wealth of Wireless
For an industry based upon the management of remote and mobile resources, the railroads now have an amazingly amount of wireless data available to them that can provide the timely data necessary to properly manage those resources. However, there are several wireless platform alternatives from which to chose. While each of the Class I’s has made a selection via its particular rational process, the selection process to date for an industry-wide solution does not seem to be based upon technical, financial, functional, or even availability factors. Instead, it appears to be a matter of industry politics at play. This volume identifies the underlying technical, functional, and investment issues associated with each wireless alternative so as to provide a candid and pragmatic comparison of their deployment across an individual railroad as well as across the industry.

FS53 - Passion
What an extraordinary feeling. Really, what is life without passion? However, what an extraordinary burden it may also be for those that both express it as well as for those who are affected by its usage if done without objectivity, without rational thinking of what is appropriate. In fact, passion can be productive ... or it can be destructive if not dealt with in an realistic, objective fashion. And, we know that being human is a process of not being consistently realistic. This volume explores passion in the rail industry by illustrating examples of the good and bad of its usage as well as it absence. The discussion ends with a reflection on behavior science from the 70's and the passion for self, a.k.a. self-actualization, which seems to have gone missing, at best misinterpreted, in the current corporate environment focused on this year’s quota, near term bonuses, and the rate of change within the organization chart.

Full Spectrum #54 - Executable Strategies
The railroads and the suppliers are doing irrevocable harm to themselves and the industry by not pursuing Executable Strategies. The PTC mandate has paved the way by forcing an industry-wide wireless data infrastructure, but there are no strategy or resources being applied to take advantage of this paradigm shift from the Core Infrastructure.

Strategic Railroading™
Given recent tech advances there is now an unprecedented opportunity to advance railroad operations and the integration of high speed rail with freight. Real-time traffic management and communication is possible without significant development and deployment costs, but it will take a technology strategy working hand-in-hand with an operational strategy, it will take Strategic Railroading.™
